I TRIED TO DESCRIBE RED
I tried to describe red to you
and the deepest blue of the ocean
and sunset orange
but you could only see in black and white.
I walked with you through bird-laden forests
and by babbling brooks
but you couldn’t hear the melody.

I whispered the breeze to you:
bubbled over with the joy of paddling in streams
but you kept on your stout coat and stout shoes.
I tried to colour your life
with laughterand inspiration and hope
but you couldn’t catch the dream,
you preferred everything grey.
I talked of the warmth of the sun
and the warmth of friendshipbut
you weren’t prepared to take the risk
and kept the blinds firmly down.
I tried to share my Lord with you
but you couldn’t understand
the colour and the sound of his love.
I searched for the key to your heart
but only Jesus knew where it was kept
and he unlocked the door.
Now I hardly see you.
You’re busy dancing barefoot in puddles
and singing through forests
and painting love in vibrant colours across your sky.
